Downloading, Installing, and Using Irfanview

We are unable to recommend one viewer over another.

This is not an endorsement of Irfanview nor any other viewer.

We cannot support Irfanview or any other viewer.

If you choose to use Irfanview and you run into problems, you are welcome to let us know you are having problems, but we cannot support you in any way (with Irfanview) short of offering the minimul notes you will find below.

Use the following notes at your own risk.

The following areas are touched on here:

Downloading Irfanview
  • At the time of this writing, you should be able to download Irfanview from http://www.irfanview.com.

  • To download, first click on the "Download" link.

  • Then click on the link to "Download Irfanview".

  • Choose your operating system. Note: I am creating these instructions on a machine running Windows XP®. Your options may be slightly different and/or your screens may look different.

  • When the "File Download" window appears, click on "Save"

  • Pick a location you can remember and find again. (You can even choose your Desktop if that is your usual download location.)

Installing Irfanview

  • If you saved the file to your Desktop, you can just go to your Desktop and double-click the file to start the install. If you saved it somewhere else, Open "Windows Explorer®" and navigate to the folder. Once you have found the file, double-click it to start the install.

  • You can pick most any setting on this install screen. I choose to create icons "For all users". You can accept the default for the "Destination Folder" or you can enter some other location. Then click "Next".

  • On the next screen, click "Next".

  • Here we have reached a decision point. You could associate Irfanview to as many file types as you like, but we recommend that you do NOT associate it to any at all! If you were to associate it to only one, that one would be TIF/TIFF. However, if you associate Irfanview to TIF/TIFF then Windows® will only ever use Irfanview for all TIF/TIFF files until you manually go and change the association back to some other viewer. For our purposes here, it will be better if you do not make any associations at this time. We will use a different method of launching Irfanview.

  • On the next screen, click "Next" again.

  • When the installation is complete, you should see "Installation Successful". Click on "Done".

Using Irfanview

  • Using Irfanview should be fairly intuitive, but I'll mention a few minor details to smooth the transition.

Irfanview is not a plugin, so it does not run inside your browser. Each time you use Irfanview, it will open as a separate program from your browser.

If you went against our suggestions above and elected to associate Irfanview and TIF/TIFF files, you can just find any TIFF files you have saved to your hard drive and just double-click them to open them in Irfanview.

If you did not associate Irfanview and TIF/TIFF files, we will use a different method for opening TIFF files onto Irfanview.

  • Using "Windows Explorer®", find the TIFF file you downloaded to your hard drive.

  • Right-click on the name of the file and select "Open With" and then select Irfanview.

  • You can also just open Irfanview from the "Start" menu and open a file by selecting "File" and "Open" from within Irfanview.

  • Once you have a file open in Irfanview, you have several options. I'll only talk about a few of them here.

  • A copy of the main functions you will most likely want to use are "Zoom" and "Scroll Through Pages". Do not confuse "Scroll Through Pages" with "Scroll Through Documents". "Scroll Through Documents" will shuffle through all of the documents is the same directory as the selected document, whereas "Scroll Through Pages" will allow you to view all of the pages within a single document.

  • You can get to "Image Rotate" and "Image Flip" off the "Image" menu.

  • You can set the default "Image Fit" through the "View" then "Display Options" menus.

  • You can get to the "Print" option off the "File" menu.

  • Which will then give you a fairly impressive set of print options.
